The Old West will come alive once again when more than 600 men, women and juniors gather for the 19th annual Winter Range hosted at the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Ben Avery Shooting Facility from Feb. 24-28.

Winter Range is an exciting “Old West” style, five-day event that provides the backdrop for the Single Action Shooting Society’s National Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting. This annual event traditionally draws thousands of spectators and Old West enthusiasts.

Cowboy Action Shooting™ is the fastest-growing shooting sport in America, and requires contestants to compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single-action revolvers, lever-action rifles, and old-time shotguns. Participants must also adopt a "shooting alias" appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, a Hollywood Western star, or an appropriate fictional character, and then costume themselves accordingly.

In addition to the competitive events, Winter Range will also feature displays of period militaria, exhibitions of western skills and crafts, and vendors purveying everything from period clothing to antiques and reproductions. Entertainment will be available in the form of a number of singers, cowboy bands, and the authentic history of gaming and masterful sleight of hand by the amazing Lafitte, Knight of the Green Cloth. A variety of food services are also available - from authentic chuck wagon cooking to hot dogs. This is an exciting event for the whole family.

The Ben Avery Shooting Facility is located in north Phoenix on Carefree Highway just west of I-17 (Exit 223). Daily event times are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. from Wednesday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, Feb. 27, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28. Admission is free, but parking is $5. While in the shooting areas, spectators will be required to wear eye protection (sunglasses and corrective glasses are acceptable) and ear protection is strongly suggested, especially for children.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Filmmaker, Scott McCullough (The Exorcism Diaries, Prince Unauthorized) is working on a script in association with U.S. based Producers, Silver Lining Pictures, according to the filmmaker and industry sources. "Born by the River-The Story of Sam Cooke" is the story of a man affectionately referred to as "The King of Soul" and one of the fore founders of soul music. Known for his unique voice, meaningful lyrics and wide influence of today's world of music. Cooke, authored songs such as "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Chain Gang" and "Wonderful World" among his most influential hits. The former gospel artist turned pop-icon died after being shot in a Los Angeles motel in 1964.
I like two types of films, action and westerns, both with guns, balls and beautiful women. Bullets and blood are exactly how Sly closed out his infamous Rambo franchise and as a director he has learned a vital ingredient in filmmaking-to surround oneself with the finest in the trade that can compliment the grittiness and violence his more recent films are known for.

Quantum Leap Thinking

How many wonderful ideas have never been put out in world because their creator was afraid of appearing foolish? How many people have stifled their creativity because of fear? How many of you have never allowed your creative vision to become reality for fear of asking for help or creating a partnership? Far too many, I'm afraid.

An instrument designed and built at the UofA measured the isotopic composition of the Mars atmosphere, suggesting liquid water has interacted with the Martian surface throughout the planet's history.
WINSLOW, Ariz. - Jackson Browne may have made bundles of cash on his hit song, "Take It Easy" and his famous lyrics, "Standin' On A Corner In Winslow, Arizona"; as for life in this small town there's a dedicated few who made a few things possible, in order to bring life back to this once booming 'Route 66' town.

With dove season being open (Sept. 1), it's a good time for a cast-n-blast trip, especially along the lower Colorado River.

Yuma has the prime dove hunting with all of its agricultural fields. During the past two weeks, however, I witnessed lots of doves all along the Colorado River from the Topock Gorge to Yuma (and also lots of fat quail for October fin and feather trips).

Susan Granger Reviews

Usually, when the only critics screening of a star-driven spy thriller is just two days before opening, it's an indication that there's a problem. And there is. This is not an action movie, and it's certainly not a conventional thriller. Not that it isn't intriguing. It is - if you're into meditative, minimalist, non-commercial, European-style filmmaking.

Decisions by the Supreme Court can be predictable. You just know well in advance, that the current court will vote 5-4 on some issues like the legality of Proposition 8 or whether corporations can donate unlimited amounts of money to candidates. Jurors are different. They can be unpredictable, even ignoring the law as related by the judge's instructions. For example: let's say that in summing up a case the judge tells the jury, "If you agree that the defendant committed premeditated murder, you may vote "guilty of murder one." Let's say you're sitting on a jury handling a case in which the defendant admittedly cut, chopped, broken and burned five men, all thoroughly planned out. That's murder one, no?
