National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
TUCSON, Ariz. - The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to have disproportionate and devastation impact on the Latino/Hispanic population residing in the United States and its territories. The persistence and growth of the HIV epidemic among Latinos/Hispanics is nothing short of a public health crisis that demands immediate and ongoing action and mobilization.
In response to the high HIV/AIDS infections among Hispanics/Latinos, National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLADD) was established to draw attention to the critical role HIV testing and prevention education plays in stemming the spread of HIV/AIDS.
ONE OUT OF EVERY 4 PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN PIMA COUNTY IS LATINO (Pima County Health Department, 2008)
ONE OUT OF EVERY 3 PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 20 AND 29 IS LATINO (Pima County Health Department, 2008)

On October 15, 2009, over 300 institutions in 250 cities across the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands will sponsor activities that respond to the state of HIV/AIDS among Latinos in their specific communities, ranging from HIV testing to cultural events, in an effort to reduce new infections and provide care for Hispanics/Latinos living with the virus. NLADD will galvanize our voices and actions, and through our collaborative efforts – together with our brothers and sisters from the African-American, Pacific Islander, Native American, and Anglo communities – we will be better prepared to respond to this crisis. Our hope is that NLAAD will become a year-round active network that promotes collaboration and partnerships.
Tucson will not be left behind in the efforts to educate our community on the epidemic of HIV/AIDS; therefore the 7th Annual National Latino AIDS Awareness Day will take place on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at Pima Community College, West Campus, Proscenium Theater from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The activities of the evening will include, educational classes, information and resource fair, free HIV counseling and testing, entertainment, guest speakers, refreshments, and an awards ceremony which will culminate the evening. This event is FREE and open to the public, and is being organized by a collaborative community effort including Luz Social Services, Inc., COPE Community Services, Inc., Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, TIHAN, Wingspan, and Pima County Health Department.
